How to wind down: Night time routine

Having a night time routine is your ESSENTIAL to a good night's sleep.

No one wants to be waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Implementing a few steps into your routine before heading to bed will allow you to leave the day behind resetting your goals and creating the correct mindset for your day ahead. Here are Maelo’s suggestions on how you can wind down, prepare and reflect:

Health: Nourish your body

  • Eat a nutritious meal (bonus if it’s homemade)

  • Drink a glass of water before bed

  • Don’t deny yourself that little dessert that you deserve

Prepare: Get yourself set for the next day and your evening

  • Prepare your breakfast and work lunch ready for the next day

  • Lay out your clothes; activewear and/or work clothes

  • Pack your work bag at the door with your keys ready to go

  • Set your morning alarms

  • Place a glass of water next to your bed

Switch off: Spend your last couple of hours before sleeping relaxing

  • Put your phone on ‘do not disturb’

  • Read a book or put on some easy to watch tv/movie

  • Set yourself a bedtime and stick to it

  • Make yourself a herbal tea

  • Wind down with a shower and skincare

  • Avoid touching your phone in the last hour to 30 minutes before actually falling asleep

Reflect: Once in bed, spend a few moments for yourself. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What are you grateful for today?

  • What are you proud of from your day?

  • How can you make tomorrow better?

  • What was one thing you prioritised for yourself today?

Taking the time to actually think about your night time routine and implement some changes is only going to benefit your health and wellbeing. There might be nights where you have more time to pamper yourself and other nights may only be your non-negotiables. Either way, your quality of sleep will thank you for it.
